What is VFX?

Combining computer graphics with live action

Visual Effects (VFX) is combining the live action plate (backgrounds) with computer generated layers or elements (CGI). There are many different roles in the VFX industry here are a few. 

Animator

Animators are the artists that gives the illusion of movement bringing life and personality to inanimate objects, characters and creatures.

Compositor

Compositors assemble the final shots of the film sequences. Combining all the layers from the other departments (assets, lighting, fx etc.) into one beautiful shot and eventually film.

Effects Artist

An FX Artist or Effects Animator is someone who can look at any reference given to them whether it's photorealistic or stylized and be able to recreate the look in motion. Fx artists sometimes need to find solutions to solve both creative and technical problems.

Matte Painter

Digital matte painters or DMP artists create photo-real environments combing 2d/3d elements.

Modeling and Texturing

The artist responsible for creating the 3d model (characters and environments) and texturing/lookdev the assets. some bigger studios will split up these roles depends on the size of the studio.

Lighting and Rendering

The artist responsible for creating the final look and render of a shot.
